The annual The Press Photographers Association of Ireland awards at the Ballsbridge Hotel, Dublin. It was a Gala event hosted by the one and only Miriam O’Callaghan. The overall photographer of the year is the ever amazing Mark Condren. Take a look at the winning images here : PPAI 2016

The awards have 9 sections, News, People and Daily Life, Sports Action, Sports Features, Portrait, Nature and the Environment, Politics, Arts and Entertainment and Reportage. There was over 2500 entries into the competition so it is fiercely contested.

True Media were all in attendance. Truly a great night on all our calendars, catching up with colleagues from all over the country, a real chance to share stories from the precious year.

From the PPAI website: The Press Photographers Association of Ireland, the PPAI, is a not-for-profit, volunteer lead organization comprising of the best photographers in Ireland, both established as well as up-and-coming talent. Dedicated to encouragement, promotion & public engagement, as well as rewarding and recognition of the highest quality of excellence in the field, the Association is an inclusive, member focused, public facing organization, advancing the craft and it’s perception.

The Barrington’s Hospital Great Limerick Run that started at the award winning People’s Park surrounded by Georgian Limerick and wound its through the historical, sporting and cultural sites, such as The Treaty Stone and Thomond Park Stadium, before finishing on Limericks O’Connell Street.

6 year old Cormac Downey from Shanagolden, Limerick is cheered on by his mother Catherine when taking part in the UL Sport Kid’s Run, Ireland’s largest single mass participation event for children, at the University of Limerick.

SHORTLISTED – SPORTS FEATURE – 2016

A moment which represents an iconic day when sport transcended politics - the 2007 victory for Ireland in an unforgettable clash with England in Croke Park, will be unveiled in a stunning sculpture at Shannon Airport on Friday. Irish sculptor Paddy Campbell with his piece, titled ' The day That Changed Ireland ', captures a famous Irish line-out that saw rugby legend Paul O’Connell, raised by teammates John Hayes and Donncha O’Callaghan, in the second half of the treasured game and will stand in the airport terminal building for future generations to savour. The sculpture is a representation of a photograph by Irish Times photographer Cyril Byrne, an image that has already been captured in an official An Post stamp. The 2007 game stands out as one of the great Irish moments of the new millennium, marking a symbolic new chapter in Anglo-Irish relations as Ireland and England met for the first time in any sport at the home of GAA. The sculpture will be unveiled at a special event on Friday attended by O’Connell, Hayes and O’Callaghan among others, including Sean Kelly, the GAA President at the time who moved to lift the ban on non-GAA sports being played at the hallowed ground.
